Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT, is a type of mental health therapy that involves helping you to gain an understanding of your individual thoughts and behaviours and looks at how to make changes to help break unhelpful cycles of thinking and/or behaving that keep your problems going. CBT enables you to learn tools and techniques that can help you take control of your problems and ultimately become your own therapist so that you can develop resilience to future mental health problems.

CBT has been found by a vast amount of research to be one of the most effective forms of psychological treatment for many common mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, panic disorder, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety, post-traumatic stress, health anxiety and work or exam stress and can also help with deeper rooted issues such as low self-esteem, low confidence, relationship difficulties and personality disorders.

CBT differs from counselling, in that it is a goal-directed, active therapy that is focused on both helping understand where problems may have arisen from as well as helping you make changes in the here and now in order to help overcome your difficulties and move forward. CBT can be flexible and an appropriate amount of treatment, delivered by a competent therapist can usually help you, no matter how long you have been experiencing difficulties.

We offer individual courses of Cognitive behavioural therapy, conducted face to face in our clinic rooms, or by video or by telephone, subject to your preference. Treatment sessions are usually up to 1 hour long and prices start at £80 for up to one hour. The number of sessions required will vary depending upon your individual needs, which we will always discuss after your initial assessment and prior to moving forward into treatment. Most treatment courses, on average, require somewhere between 6 and 15 sessions.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR therapy is used for effectively treating difficulties that have arisen as a result of a distressing or traumatic life event and can be considered as an alternative to CBT treatment for this type of problem. EMDR, like CBT, is supported by a great deal of evidence that it is effective and as such is endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the National Centre of Clinical Excellence (NICE). EMDR combines talking therapy with specific, repetitive eye movements and it has been shown to resolve symptoms associated with traumatic experiences that may be negatively impacting on our lives, such as ongoing anxiety and worry, poor sleep, feeling on edge, nightmares, flashbacks, low mood and/or restlessness.

EMDR can be very effective very quickly for many people. Studies have shown that EMDR can significantly decrease post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in just two or three sessions, and that this effect is long-lasting (e.g. Ironson, Freund, Strauss & Williams, 2002; Scheck, Schaffer & Gilllette, 1998). Others may need more sessions than this, particularly if a person has experienced several traumatic events,  neglect or poor treatment as a child. Prices for EMDR are £90 per 1 hour session.

"Gayle helped me feel very relaxed and clearly explained the process of EMDR before we began. I was surprised how, even within my first session, it enabled me to process some difficult memories and feelings about an incident of workplace bullying that I had really struggled to even talk about before. I now feel much less bothered by what happened and have been able to let go of the bad feelings, which has been very empowering! Thank you so much."
